Press statement by MCA Selangor Liaison Committee secretary Dato’ Ng Chok Sin

SELCAT should investigate suspected power abuse in MBI and DEIG

The Selangor Competency, Accountability and Transparency Select Committee (SELCAT) must take the initiative to investigate suspected abuse of power within Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) and Darul Ehsan Investment Group (DEIG).

Ever since PKR Deputy President Azmin Ali assumed the post of Selangor Menteri Besar, MBI has on many occasions caught the people’s attention of being accused of involvement in power abuse.

As such, the Selangor state Legislative Assembly Speaker and SELCAT chairman Hannah Yeoh must initiate the move to investigate and clear the air for the people.

Even though the Selangor Menteri Besar had repeatedly said that DEIG which was attached to MBI had not commenced operations, the fact remains that Azmin had directly transferred the power to disburse Selangor zakat to DEIG and even allowed private disbursement by PKR Youth (AMK). This is clearly an abuse of power.

Obviously, there is involvement of invisible hands when DEIG, being an RM2 company could borrow a whopping RM500 million from a bank without the endorsement from the Selangor state Legislative Assembly.

Once DEIG is given the green light to operate, it will be a trustee corporation with RM30 billion of Selangor assets and will dictate the pulse of the state. As such, its transparency must be strictly scrutinised.

These are Selangor’s assets and should not be simply transferred to a two-ringgit company with no professional management experience and basis. In addition, the set-up and operation model of DEIG had also left a bad taste in the mouth.

On the other hand, DAP which had been harping on the 1MDB issue, must also use the same yardstick to assess and monitor the operations of DEIG.

It is incumbent upon SELCAT to ensure good governance in Selangor and initiate the investigation to preserve its integrity and to avoid the perception of favouritism and cover-up by the people at large.
