Press statement by MCA Social Development Committee
Chairman and MCA Vice President Senator Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun
Uphold
Hippocratic Oath – Treat all patients irrespective of how their attendants
maybe attired
MCA Social Development Committee is
outraged and disturbed at the China Press
news report and then carried by The
Rakyat Post (6 Nov 15) whereby an injured two-year old toddler whose finger
was cut was allegedly denied entry and treatment at three medical facilities ie
Klinik 1Malaysia in Saleng in Johor Baru, Klinik 1Malaysia in Bandar Indahpura
in Kulai and Kulai Hospital last Saturday, 31 Oct 15 as health authorities had
deemed the pants worn by the mother and aunt were too short. The toddler was
finally allowed treatment at a private clinic after the mother put on a sarong
given by a nurse.
As the incident occurred at both public clinics and a hospital and private clinic in Johor, our Committee wonders if there is a new regulation on appropriate attire and modesty introduced by the Johor Health Department for patients and their attendants before they may even enter any healthcare facility in Johor. And if so, how could it be enforced when treating patients to help them recover is the primary care of medical workers and facilities.
Little Napoleons in government departments in Johor should take note of the Parliamentary reply issued by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dato’ Azalina Othman yesterday that Putrajaya does not enforce dress codes on members of the public visiting government departments and will entertain even those who are dressed inappropriately.
More essential is that medical practitioners must uphold the Hippocratic Oath to be devoted towards healing and uphold ethical standards. If a rape victim who is abandoned by the roadside and is brought into a clinic or hospital not fully covered, is that victim to be likewise rejected and neglected by healthcare workers?
We urge the Ministry of Health to launch a full-scale investigation as there clearly is a case of medical neglect and take the appropriate action. Such stupidity needs to be corrected.
