Penang PAS vs Penang govt on local govt appointments = Pakatan failure to reach consensus
Widely reported in the media, Penang PAS had threatened
to quit the Pakatan coalition if the Penang state government continued to
interfere in the party’s appointment of candidates for posts with the Penang
Islamic Affairs Council (MAIPP), Penang and Seberang Perai municipal councils
(MPPP and MPSP), and village development and security committees (JKKKs) located
in every constituency. This latest public discord once again exposes that the
tripartite Pakatan coalition was formed none other than for political
expediency.
Penang PAS deputy commissioner Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff informed that his party demands a quota be set for its members to be appointed as directors on the boards of state government-linked companies, control over the appointments of JKKK members in the six state and two parliamentary constituencies contested by PAS and that the number of Penang and Seberang Prai municipal councillors from PAS to be increased from two to four for each council although the Penang state government has the final say over the appointments. This open tumult where PAS members express dissatisfaction contradicts Pakatan’s much bandied consensus on policies and appointments. The reality is that Pakatan’s mutual purpose is political interest.
The Penang state government claims to practise the CAT policy of competency, accountability and transparency. But ironically, it is impossible to achieve any mutual benefit from this alliance because they constantly disagree due to their various backgrounds. The only reason they are working together is because they only have one goal.
Being so divided in their political ideology, Pakatan’s only common aim of forming a shakey alliance was solely to score victory at the election. They have no and can never reach a consensus. Thus, how will they ever be able to govern the country? Even after winning the state government, they are openly engaged in public disagreements and infighting which only serves to destabilise the country politically further and the rakyat will be at the losing end.
Even on the topic of PAS hudud enactment, Pakatan allies are not able to reach a consensus. Too regularly, PAS leaders will publicly call for the implementation of their hardline Criminal Codes. DAP being under political pressure will evade rather than address the topic to mislead the rakyat.
How can the Pakatan coalition dare to ruin the prospects of the country when they have no political consensus and are in frequent discord, and so much speculation linger on how they will govern at the federal level? The country’s situation will descend into chaos under Pakatan. The answer therefore is to totally reject Pakatan.
